Burning is combustion — rapid oxidation that converts the bulk of the material into carbon dioxide, water vapor, and smoke, on the spot, in minutes. What doesn't go up as smoke is left behind as ash, a small fraction of the pile's original mass and nutrient content. The two processes aren't really competing methods of "getting rid of" yard waste so much as two different endpoints: one keeps the material's value in your yard, the other releases most of it into the air.
Why composting usually wins on nutrients
Leaves, grass clippings, and prunings are full of carbon and nitrogen, and composting is built specifically to conserve both. EPA's home composting guidance recommends layering roughly two to three parts carbon-rich "browns" — dry leaves, twigs, shredded paper — to one part nitrogen-rich "greens" like grass clippings and food scraps, which lets microorganisms break the pile down into finished compost typically within three to five months, according to EPA's composting-at-home guide. The result is a soil amendment that improves structure, retains moisture and nutrients, and reduces how much fertilizer and pesticide your yard needs going forward.
Burning destroys most of that value instead of conserving it. Nitrogen and sulfur volatilize and are lost to the air almost entirely when organic material burns, while phosphorus and potassium mostly stay behind in the ash — though a portion of those is lost too if the ash blows offsite, per Ohio State University Extension's Agronomic Crops Network. Composting has no equivalent failure mode; a poorly managed compost pile might smell bad or attract pests, but it isn't going to threaten your house or your neighbor's fence line.
The legal reality: burning yard waste is increasingly restricted
Even where burning yard waste is technically allowed, the list of places where it flatly isn't has been growing, and composting is usually the explicit alternative regulators point to.
Michigan has prohibited open burning of yard waste and leaves in municipalities of 7,500 people or more since 1995, and the state's own open burning guidance lists composting yard waste and using leaves and grass clippings for mulch as the recommended alternatives, according to Michigan EGLE's open burning regulations brochure. Where burning still makes sense
Composting isn't the right tool for everything. A few situations genuinely favor burning, or at least make composting impractical:
Diseased or pest-infested plant material. Backyard compost piles usually don't sustain the sustained high heat needed to reliably kill plant pathogens and pest eggs, so infected material can reintroduce the problem when you spread the finished compost. Removing it through burning (where legal) or municipal disposal is often the safer call.
Volume beyond what you can compost. A single storm can generate more downed limbs and brush than any backyard compost setup can reasonably absorb in a season. Invasive plants with viable seed. Some invasive species need higher, sustained temperatures than a typical home pile reaches to fully destroy their seeds, so burning or bagging for landfill disposal is sometimes recommended over composting for those specific plants.
