Burning Near Power Lines, Fences, and Sheds: Safe Distances Explained

How far does a burn pile need to be from a shed, a fence, or a power line? Here are the setback numbers real agencies actually publish, why power lines are a special category, and how to measure clearance the way an inspector would.

Most people pick a burn spot by eye. It's the bare patch at the back of the property, far enough from the house to feel comfortable, near enough to the brush pile that they won't have to drag limbs a hundred yards. Then the fire runs hotter than expected, the wind picks up a little, and suddenly the wood fence twenty feet downwind looks a lot closer than it did that morning.

Setback distances exist because that gap between "feels far enough" and "is far enough" has been measured, repeatedly, in escaped-fire investigations. The numbers aren't arbitrary, they aren't the same everywhere, and — this is the part that surprises people — the distance from a power line isn't really a distance question at all. Here's what the rules actually say, and how to lay out a burn site that satisfies both the code and the physics.

Quick answer:

  • 50 feet from a structure is the single most common published setback for residential open burning in the U.S. Loudoun County, Virginia uses it, Washington State uses it, and it turns up in county ordinances nationwide.

  • The distance changes with what you're burning. Florida requires yard-waste piles to sit 25 feet from wildlands or any combustible structure, 50 feet from a paved public road, and 150 feet from an occupied building you don't own. Land-clearing debris is far stricter: North Carolina requires 500 feet from occupied structures.

  • Fences count as structures in practice, even when the ordinance doesn't name them — a wood fence line is a continuous fuel path leading straight to your neighbor's yard.

  • Power lines are not a setback problem, they're a smoke problem. Smoke is conductive, and a heavy smoke column under an energized line can trigger a discharge to ground similar to lightning. The fix is never letting a fire front build a large smoke column under the line, not standing a fixed number of feet away.

  • Always confirm with your local fire marshal or air quality agency. Setbacks are among the most locally variable numbers in the entire open-burning rulebook.

The 50-foot default, and why it's only a starting point

If you asked a hundred fire marshals for one number, most would say fifty feet. Loudoun County, Virginia's Fire Marshal's Office puts it plainly: open burning may be no closer than 50 feet from a structure, fires must be attended at all times by a competent person 18 or older, and provisions for control and extinguishment must be available (Loudoun County open burning regulations). Even the exempt category — a cooking campfire no larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high — has to keep that same 50-foot standoff from a structure.

Notice what that implies. Fifty feet is not the distance at which a fire becomes safe; it's the distance at which a small, attended, compliant fire becomes acceptable. Scale up the pile and the number stops being adequate long before the ordinance says so.

Loudoun's own tiering shows this. A portable outdoor fireplace or chiminea needs only 15 feet of clearance from a structure or combustible material. Open burning needs 50. Agricultural burning — clearing a field or fence row — needs 50 feet from a structure and 1,000 feet from an occupied structure unless the occupant has given prior permission. Development-related land clearing also carries a 1,000-foot standoff from occupied structures. Same county, same fire, four different answers depending on fuel volume and who else is nearby.

What the strictest states require, and why

North Carolina is the clearest illustration of how much fuel volume matters. Residential yard waste can be burned on the property where it was generated, subject to time-of-day and air-quality-forecast limits. But land-clearing burn piles must be at least 500 feet from occupied structures and at least 250 feet from any public road when prevailing winds are blowing toward the road, according to the N.C. Division of Air Quality. The state also publishes formal setback waiver forms, which tells you how often people run into that 500-foot wall and how seriously the agency treats requests to move it.

Florida splits the difference with a three-number setback that's worth memorizing as a model, even if you live elsewhere. For residential yard waste — leaves, shrub trimmings, grass clippings, palm fronds, brush — the Florida Department of Environmental Protection requires the pile be no greater than eight feet in diameter and set back 25 feet from any wildlands, brush, or combustible structure; 50 feet from any paved public roadway; and 150 feet from any occupied building other than one owned or leased by the person burning. Burning runs from 8:00 a.m. CST (9:00 a.m. EST) to one hour before sunset, attended, with extinguishing equipment ready.

Three different distances, three different things being protected: your own outbuildings, drivers, and your neighbors. That's the logic underneath almost every setback table in the country. When you can't find your local numbers, working backward from those three categories will get you close.

California approaches it from the opposite direction — capping pile size rather than pushing the pile far away. CAL FIRE's residential debris burning guidance limits piles to roughly 4 feet in diameter and requires a 10-foot clearance to bare mineral soil in every direction, with a shovel and water source on hand and an adult present throughout. A small pile with a genuinely bare ring around it behaves very differently from a large pile sitting on cured grass, which is the whole point. Fences and sheds: the structures nobody measures to

Ordinances say "structure." People hear "house." That gap is where a lot of property damage happens.

A wood privacy fence is the worst-case backyard fuel: continuous, elevated, dry, and it runs in a straight line to somewhere you don't own. Radiant heat from a modest pile will scorch it; a single ember in a cracked picket will smolder for an hour before anyone notices. Measure your setback to the fence, not past it.

Sheds and outbuildings deserve the same treatment, with an extra wrinkle: what's inside them. A detached shed with a gas can, a mower, and a stack of paint is a far more consequential target than its footprint suggests. And burning an outbuilding itself is flatly illegal nearly everywhere — North Carolina's prohibited list names buildings, including outbuildings and mobile homes, right alongside tires and treated wood.

Two practical notes. First, measure setbacks from the edge of the cleared area, not the center of the pile — a 4-foot pile with a 10-foot clear ring occupies an 18-foot circle before the fire even starts. Second, measure downwind distance generously. A 50-foot setback into a 12 mph wind is not a 50-foot setback in any meaningful sense, which is why wind mistakes dominate escaped-burn reports.

Power lines: the hazard that isn't about distance

Here's where the mental model has to change. With a shed, the risk is heat and embers reaching the shed. With an overhead power line, the risk is electricity reaching you — and it travels through smoke.

Kansas State Research and Extension's Prescribed Burning Safety publication explains the mechanism directly: smoke consists of carbon particles, which conduct electricity. If the carbon concentration is high enough, an electrical discharge from the line to the ground — similar to lightning — can occur. The hazard increases as line voltage increases, as the distance to ground decreases, and as the amount of smoke increases. K-State states flatly that such discharges have killed firefighters.

The recommended control is not a setback. It's smoke management: don't let the fire front cross under the lines across a large area. Coordinate the burn location with wind direction, or light parallel to the line so no major smoke column builds beneath it.

Three more power-line hazards from the same publication and from utility guidance:

  • Never direct water streams into overhead lines. Water conducts, and the stream becomes the conductor. Evergy's field burning safety guidance says water and other chemicals used to extinguish fires should never be directed toward a transmission line, pole, or structure.

  • Downed lines on wire fences carry current a long way. If a burned or struck pole drops a line onto a wire fence, the fence conducts for a considerable distance, and downed lines are hard to see once they're on the ground.

  • Poles themselves burn. Evergy recommends mowing and removing vegetation at least 15 feet around any pole or structure before burning, tilling the ground or keeping green crops around the base during burn season, and applying fire retardant per the manufacturer's instructions — but never spraying or treating the pole directly.

Evergy also asks to be notified before any burning or fire activity near its transmission lines, noting that early notification can prevent unnecessary service interruptions and damage. Most utilities have some version of this policy. Call yours; it costs nothing.

One small detail worth carrying over from wildland practice: OSU Extension warns that metal hard hats can be hazardous near power lines, because smoke can cause the lines to arc.

FAQ

How far should a burn pile be from a house?

Fifty feet from a structure is the most common published minimum, and many jurisdictions require more from occupied buildings you don't own — Florida uses 150 feet, and North Carolina requires 500 feet for land-clearing piles. Treat 50 feet as a floor for a small, attended yard-waste fire, and increase it for larger piles, dry fuels, or downwind targets.

Do I need to keep a distance from my own shed or fence?

Yes. Most ordinances say "structure" without listing what counts, and fire marshals generally read that broadly. Even where a fence isn't legally a structure, it's a continuous fuel path — measure to it as though it were.

Can I burn directly underneath a power line?

You should not. The risk isn't clearance from the wire; it's that dense smoke under an energized line can create a conductive path and allow a discharge to ground. Plan the burn so no significant smoke column builds under the line, keep water streams away from overhead conductors, clear vegetation around poles beforehand, and notify your utility.

What if I can't meet the setback on my property?

Some states have a formal process — North Carolina publishes setback waiver forms reviewed by the Division Director, and approval isn't automatic even with all affected residents' signatures. Otherwise, the practical answers are to reduce the pile size, haul the material to a legal disposal or chipping option, or wait for a wind direction that puts the protected target upwind.
